Research at Durango Orthopedic Associates and Spine Colorado Effects of Platelet Gel on Spinal Fusion Outcomes. This internally supported study is a retrospective analysis of the effects of using growth factors derived and concentrated from the patient’s own blood to augment bone graft used in spine fusion. The Oxiplex® Gel Study. Sponsored by FzioMed, Inc., the aim of this multi-center, blinded, randomized study is to determine the efficacy of a barrier gel product designed to reduce post-operative pain associated with peridural adhesions following lumbar discectomy. The Cellect™ Study. Sponsored by DePuy Spine, Dr. Youssef was the first orthopedic surgeon in the country to enroll patients into this multi-center study. The technology for preparing a bone graft using stem cells harvested from the patient’s own bone marrow is being compared to the use of more traditional procedures whereby autogenous iliac crest is harvested to obtain graft material for use in lumbar fusion. The Neurovision™ Study: A Comparison Between Conventional EMG Monitoring and Automated EMG Monitoring of Pedicle Screw Placement During Instrumented Lumbar Spine Surgery. Sponsored by NuVasive, Inc. this study evaluates a state of the art system for real-time data acquisition to aid in the placement of pedicle screws used in lumbar surgery. The HEALOS® Study. Sponsored by DePuy Spine, this study seeks to expand the Cellect‘ technology for using the patient’s own stem cells by incorporating the use of HEALOS“ a synthetic bone graft material for use in spinal fusion composite grafts. This technology will avoid the use of cadaver donor bone and the complications associated with its use and availability. The Degenerative Disc Disease Study. Sponsored by DePuy Spine, is a basic science inquiry into the genetic basis of degenerative disc disease. Disc material that is removed during spine surgery is analyzed for genetic traits that may be markers for the onset or progression of disc disease. These factors can then be used to design drugs or other therapies to treat the disease.
Resources obtained from clinical trials and research grant awards support a full-time research coordinator position and a research internship for college students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or biomedical research.
