These injections aim to relieve pain. They involve a steroid (which is an anti-inflammatory medicine) injected into a precise area of the spine using X-ray guidance.
This injection numbs the medial branch nerves to test if pain goes away. These are nerves that send pain signals to your brain if the nearby facet joints are swollen or irritated. This test is purely diagnostic, so its effects only last a few hours.
Also called “RFA,” involves heating a small area of nerve tissue to treat back and neck pain — especially related to arthritis. In many instances, this can effectively relieve pain for 8-12 months before the treatment needs repeating.
